Thank you Dr. Toni for this information. If anyone wants to buy a Chinese medicine the best place is Singapore where I grew up and the government, ethnically Chinese but pro-USFDA, is watchful and attuned. I am aware from personal discussions--and regular Straits Times reports--that mainland Chinese have imperfect awareness of the difference between a drug and a dietary supplement, hence a tendency to 'toss in' the former. Thus they killed their own hot product PC Spes. (Not to mention putting lead in Children's toys to 'make it shiny.')

I suggest you maintain a list of such products.

However this phrase either contains a grammatical redundancy or shows a peculiar bias: "...it shows how difficult it can be to monitor unsafe dietary supplements once they are marketed..." The word 'unsafe' does not belong here unless you wish to imply that all dietary supplements are inherently unsafe.

In any case, after reading your first blog, you appear to advocate plain ignorance of dietary supplements. I left this sort of thinking behind in the 70's when many doctors were saying that Linus Pauling was senile but I found that vitamin C really worked on my flu. Also as a case in point, glucosamine which was available back then has now fairly recently been medically proven as viable for joint support. Dr. Toni, your view thus claims that for over 30 years everyone should have avoided glucosamine as 'unsafe'. The same view is promoted by Quackwatch.org. However on my own website http://HolisticReview.com I will be quoting your data on bad yeast brands to criticize Quackwatch. A Quackwatch view (expressed in my Quackwatch reference above) is that because dietary supplements are not FDA monitored, therefore if you buy them, you should buy the least expensive, least reputable brands. (!) Please note that every single brand supplying defective red yeast is a low-level brand which I have hardly heard of and would never recommend: Nature's Value, Kabco, Sunburst, Swanson. My current recommendation for Red Yeast Rice is Now Foods. This is because Now Foods is the least expensive brand that also has routine in-house testing, numerous national awards and a strong reputation to defend. Now Foods also has long since reported finding dangerous impurities in Red Yeast Rice and also vitamin C from China.

I like the Quackwatch.org website because I can count on them to dig up any dirt about anything I am taking. Also they do try to give balanced data. However they have a clear bias against dietary supplements.

(P.S. Now Foods glucosamine was reported by Quackwatch as substandard based on a Consumer Reports study. However Now Foods roundly rebutted that study. Consumer Reports evidently did not read the ingredients label properly.)
