View Full Version : O: we need ORAC values for antioxidant health supplements. For example, if you take vitamin C (and you should) then perhaps you can take less of other antioxidants as suggested by 'clinical trials'. How much less? With no ORAC we can't know.
According to an article published by the Life Extension Foundation on Carnosine: if you take too many antioxidants, they begin to behave as oxidants. Nonetheless in their product advertising, Life Extension continues to speak as if simply, "More is better" for antioxidants. They make so many powerful antioxidant supplements, and their advertising makes it sound as if everyone can not do without each one of them. Yet I am quite unable to imagine anyone taking all of those supplements, or even half of them!
As someone who takes many different supplements, I personally have clearly experienced negative effects due to excessive antioxidants. It is a juggle of a struggle for me to reduce the amount of antioxidants I take, while still attempting to receive all the benefits that I should receive from natural health supplements.
The most important antioxidant is vitamin C. Everyone who is interested in health should take vitamin C. Most do. Very often, quite a lot. How might this affect the glowing suggestions based on "clinical trials" or research data for CoQ10, ALA, vitamin E, grape seed extract, green tea extract, curcumin, pomegranate, resveratrol, and on and on...? Reason dictates that the more the variety, the less you need of each.
That is true even if you do not take into account the magic word "synergy". The theory is that, two halves can make more than a whole. I.e., if you were to satisfy half of all your antioxidant needs with vitamin C, and half of all your needs with CoQ10, then according to the theory of "synergy", you might only need (just for example) not 1/2 of each, but 1/4 of the vitamin C and 1/4 of the CoQ10. Everyone talks about it, but few seem to believe it.
I personally believe in the "synergy effect" because this is what I personally seem to experience. I confess that I may be unusual. Nonetheless I am concerned about people who could possibly be overdosed with antioxidants while their friends, and possiblly even holistic doctors, are insisting that they should take more based on "clinical research."
In my opinion, we obviously need:
1. ORAC values for antioxidant supplements. I expect these to be hundreds of times greater than the now-popular ORAC values we see for blueberries and other foods.
2. A suggestion for total ORAC value intake. I.e., if the ORAC value of 1 gram vitamin C is say 100,000, and of 100mg of grape seed extract is 500,000, etc., and if the total average ideal ORAC balance is 1 to 2 million, then you can balance your usage of each supplement accordingly.
3. Molecular weight. Some antioxidants are small enough to pass through the cell membrane or "blood-brain barrier" to enter the inside of the cell. These are more active than others which are much larger molecules. Occasionally an advertisement or a book will brag about a small molecular size, but usually there is no such reference.
Please note that the first two of the above values are likely to be highly different for each person. Also I am not implying that "ORAC is everything". ALA helps to balance blood sugar--vitamin C does not. Vitamin C directly helps to fight bacterial infections--ALA does not. Also, the total ORAC that one person needs or tolerates may be 100 times greater than the ORAC which another person needs or tolerates.
Nonetheless, that is exactly why we need ORAC values, and some starting suggestions for a total. So that first, we can begin to find out through experience just what our total toleration is. We can not begin to do so until we have some idea of the relative ORAC of each supplement we take! Secondly, that for example if we have a high need to balance blood sugar, we can increase ALA, while at the same time knowing how much we may need to decrease other antioxidants to maintain our personal ORAC balance.
I also understand that ORAC values for supplements may need to be rough. Nonethess, any sort of approximation would be better than the nothing which we have now.
Perhaps ORAC values for supplements, or something equivalant, already exists? If so, someone please tell me. I will also be looking for it.
