Reasons that some people do not allow their cats outdoors.
House cats kill more species than any other animal.
Fighting with other cats.
Fleas and diseases: distemper, rabies, avian flu, etc.
Killed by dogs or other animals.
Killed by cars.
Getting lost.
Cats with white ears or faces will get cancer sunbathing, even in Vermont. Voice of experience: keep them out of strong sun.

However, cats also benefit from sun and exercise. What I do about this.

After moving or with a new cat, do not let it out for 3 months. (Or at least 1 month, or ideally 6 months.)
Put a bell collar on the cat to prevent hunting, preferably flexible so the cat can escape if the collar gets tangled in a fence.
Only let the cat out in the morning when the sun is mild.
Only feed a cat 1/4 of a small can at a time or about 1-2 tablespoons, so that the cat is accustomed to returning to you often for food.
Call the cat back in during the morning, then immediately give it a bit of food and keep it in.
You might also let the cat out in the late afternoon. But make sure it does not stay out all night. Then it is most likely to get into fights or become lost, killed by predators or run over.

The basic idea is: the less time that the cat is out, the less chance of getting into trouble.
